Ancient Greek terracotta vases with all their intricate geometric patterns and art work depicting myths and legends as well as daily life have long fascinated scholars. There are 12 basic shapes indicative of their intended use; some fulfilling a wider range of functions such as storage vessels for food, beverages, or health and beauty ingredients; even funerary urns and offerings. Over time potters and artisans greatly expanded upon the basic shapes to create a plethora of style, many on display in local museums, each unique in appearance and decoration.
